Gameplay

Similar to Mario Kart games, Sugar Rush Speedway starts with a default set of racers the player can choose from, consisting of Minty, Snowanna, Candlehead, and Crumbelina. Players race through four challenging grand prix cups, using and avoiding items like Sticky Slicks and Cherry Bombs to win the race. Additionally, completing each championship unlocks two extra racers. All four championships have three races: The first is standard, the second is reversed, and the third is mirrored.

Controls

  • Gas: Up key (with Pg Up word)
  • Steering: Left and Right key (with home and end word)
  • Brake: Down key (Pg dn word)

Items

There are several Power-ups within the game, each with their own unique affect.

  • Sugar Rush: Speed boost
  • Cherry Bomb: Explodes when someone hits it
  • Sticky Slick: Slows whoever hits it
  • Syrup Puddle: Prevents steering
  • Sweet Seekers: Hits the racer in front of you; goes backwards if you are in first. It can be odd sometimes. If you're in third going around a bend, it may aim for first place, depending on your angle.

Glitches/Bugs

There are a few glitches in the game that can be achieved very easily.

  • If you press the T key on your keyboard, you will get an item and so will the other racers. While this can be useful at times, it's not recommended as the other racers will usually get a Sweet Seeker.
  • If you turn around and go the wrong way you will be able to use infinite boost.
  • You can fall into the ground and it's possible to do this when you get hit by the sweet seekers after you press the T key.
  • In the second race of Frosty Rally, the racers constantly reset after passing the second jump for unknown reasons, making the race not as challenging.
  • Opponents can sometimes glitch into 1st without passing the player.
  • If you hover the cursor slightly above a locked racer's select button while viewing another racer's profile, you can play as that racer without actually having to unlock them first.
  • You can change your racer mid-championship. To do this, complete a race of any GP, then change your racer in the time trial screen before returning to the championship.
    • King Candy can be seen as an AI opponent if the player uses this method. However, his icon is not visible on the mini map and and a white box shows up. Additionally the player's icon will not be seen.
    • If a player uses a character that wasn't in the championship (either the player's chosen character or the available AI racers), they will spawn in a random section of the map. You will also not be able to finish the race due to the game not recognizing the extra character.

Variants and Similar Games

Japanese Localization

The no-longer-available Japanese version was nearly identical to the original, except for language changes and the replacement of Minty Zaki with Minty Sakura.

Leap Motion Version

A refined and expanded version of the browser game was developed for Leap Motion, running from 2017 to 2019, and utilized hand and finger movements as controls. Unlike the browser-based version, races were limited to a single lap, and each track featured eight racers. The Syrup Puddle item was removed, while the Bake-a-Kart minigame was later added through an update.

Wreck-it Ralph Storybook Deluxe

The now-defunct mobile app featured its own version of Sugar Rush. Players could race as a select group of characters, including Taffyta, Candlehead, Rancis, Adorabeezle, and most notably, Vanellope. Like the Leap Motion game, it also featured its own version of the Bake-a-Kart minigame.

Disney Infinity

In Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition, there is a race track called Sugar Rush Raceway, themed after Sugar Rush. Players can also make their toy boxes look like Sugar Rush with the use of two power discs: The Sugar Rush Sky, and King Candy's Dessert toppings.

Disney Speedstorm

From April 18 to June 13, 2024, the game launched its seventh season, inspired by Wreck-It Ralph. The update introduced Ralph, Felix, Calhoun, and Vanellope as playable racers, along with a track inspired by the Sugar Rush setting from the film.

Related Games

The mobile Wreck-it Ralph app features a platforming minigame called Sweet Climber, in which Ralph must bounce his way up a candy cane tree. Another game with a similar basis on the tree-climbing scene is the browser-app game Candy Cane Catapult.

Playing offline

In 2014, the game's files were unofficially released. To play it, users needed a program capable of running Unity3D files, such as Mozilla Firefox or Shubus Viewer. Some versions experienced issues: textures were misaligned (particularly in the Japanese version, which attempted to load English texture files) and King Candy failed to appear due to problems with code entry. By 2017, the game had become corrupted, with errors preventing the score system from displaying at the end of races, thereby hindering player progression.

In any case, the complete American version of the game remains accessible through the Flashpoint Archive, a community-driven project dedicated to preserving web-based games and animations.

Trivia

  • The palette swaps and Vanellope are the only racers in the movie that don't appear in the browser-based version. Fans believe that Vanellope didn't appear because it would be a major spoiler for those who hadn't seen the movie at the time.
    • Vanellope could also be unplayable as a reference to the movie, where her code is detached.
  • While the 2012 Wreck-It Ralph website used the stat "Sweetness" for Sergeant Calhoun and some of the Sugar Rush Racers as a way to reflect their charm and likability, the browser game uses Sweetness in place of acceleration. This stat, according to the game's "AI Driver Motor" and "NewDriving" files, is determined by the racer's torque level.
  • Even though Sweet Seekers appear in the game, they don't look anything like they do in the movie. The Sweet Seekers that appear in the movie look like Red Hots, and the Sweet Seekers that appear in the game look like mini missiles.
  • Although the tie-in-game was only made to promote the film, the developers appeared to have referenced early production material during the game's development. This is noted by the visual inconsistencies with the tracks and the racers' models/textures, which resemble their initial concept designs.
    • Snowanna's body is very low in her kart, placing more emphasis on her afro (to the point that at a glance she might appear to have no face and to simply be an afro sticking out of a kart). This was the case of the Fro Cone's original concept art, where the snow cone was part of the kart instead of being used as the character's afro.
  • Ice Cream Cannons are the only power-ups that appeared in the movie but that don't appear in the game.
  • If you press the letter T, you will get a power up, but you can see two power ups. The second one can be activated by collecting the same power-up.
  • According to the game's code, there is a grand prix called "Twisted Licorice Championship". It appears to be the placeholder name of the Cakeway championship series.
  • The game started experiencing issues in 2017 and was officially shut down by Disney in 2018.
  • Crumbelina will not appear as an opponent if the player is playing as King Candy.
